Guilty! Soft Drink and Fast Food Industry conspired to deceive the public--ordered to pay $300 Billion to help Obese to Diet and kick the habit!
And you were there...and you were there! No Dorothy, we aren't in Kansas anymore but that certainly is a lovely dream--and one that hopefully isn't too far off in the future; the day that Cola makers and Fast food peddlers are held accountable for their purposeful fattening of mankind. They KNOW their products are addictive, they KNOW their marketing is pursuasive and they KNOW they are making humans FAT! (www.DrinkChooseLive.com)
A federal judge ordered tobacco companies Thursday to admit they lied about the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes and to warn consumers in advertisements and packaging that tobacco is addictive.
U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that the industry conspired for decades to deceive the public about the dangers of smoking and now must pay to help smokers kick the habit. Read the entire story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14395333/
Smoking and obesity are two of the leading causes of death and illness in the United States, but the overlap between the two conditions has never been measured.
Using data from the 2002 national health interview survey, researchers estimated the proportion of adults in the US who smoke and are obese. The results were stratified for various factors, such as income and education levels.
They found that 23.5% of adults were obese and 22.7% smoked (a total of 81 million).
About 4.7% (9 million) smoked and were obese. This proportion was particularly high in African Americans (7%) and in people with lower income and education levels.
Although this overlap is relatively low, the presence of these two conditions together may carry an increased risk to health, say the authors.
Treatments for people who smoke and who are obese need to be investigated, they add. Clinical trials should monitor the effects of programmes aimed at simultaneously stopping smoking and weight control. These results could be used to develop policies for prevention and treatment.
_________
Scientific studies reveal that 1 to 1.5 liters of soft drinks a day can raise risks of numerous health problems, such as:
Tooth Decay:
All soft drinks are acidic which corrodes the teeth by eroding its enamel.
The high amount of sugar consumed through soft drinks lead to the development of bacteria that attack the teeth thus aggravating dental problems.
People who drink three or more glasses of aerated drinks (gaseous drinks) daily have much higher chances of dental decay, fillings and teeth loss. Therefore, soft drinks contain acid and sugar that corrode and destroy the teeth in one shot.
Obesity:
Soft drinks are mainly composed of filtered H2O, artificial additives and refined sugar.
Thus, they lack nutritional value and only add up calories through their refined sugar; therefore, they make you gain weight.
But is shifting to "Diet Soft Drink" the solution?
The fact is that diet soft drinks contain aspartame (an artificial low-calorie sweetener). Although aspartame does not add up the calories it makes you feel hungrier and crave for food.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) no longer allows foods containing aspartame to be labeled as "weight reduction product ". Now it insists to label these products simply as "Diet Drink" or "Diet Food ".
Research also shows that aspartame causes migraines, dizziness and more over it reduces your memory.
Malnutrition:
Some people who are addicted to soft drinks deprive themselves from food until they become victims of malnutrition. Since gastrointestinal disturbance of these drinks lead to poor appetite thus surviving on soft drinks and little amount of food will cause malnutrition, retarded growth and other physiological problems.
Effect on Gastro-Intestinal System:
When you open the bottle of a soft drink, bubbles and fizz are immediately emitted out. This is due to phosphoric acid and carbon dioxide (CO2) content, which make these drinks highly acidic. The pH of soft drink ranges from 2.5-3.4 which generates a highly acidic environment in the stomach.
Throughout the digestive system, that starts from the mouth and ends up at the anus (liver, gallbladder and pancreas play the role of accessory organs) only the stomach can resist an acidic environment up to pH 2.0. But before the acidity of soft drink reaches the stomach it passes through all the other organs involved in the digestive system thus causing an abnormal acidic environment. Hence the linings of the mouth, pharynx and esophagus are highly sensitive to acids.
Also there is a very common practice of taking soft drinks when a person suffers from acidity or after having a heavy meal. However, this is wrong.
The phosphoric acid present in soft drink competes with the hydrochloric acid of the stomach and affects its functions. When the stomach becomes ineffective, food remains undigested causing indigestion, gassiness or bloating (swelling of stomach).
Thus people who are suffering from acidity should not be drinking soft drinks because actually it increases acidity further.
Effect on Kidneys:
Kidneys are less able to excrete phosphoric acid when it is in excess. Thus, there is extra work for kidney.
Soft drinks remove Calcium from the body, causing an excess amount of Calcium that tend to be deposited in kidney, resulting in nephrolithiasis (kidney stones).
Effect on Skin:
Acidic blood affects the action of glutathione, which is an antioxidant enzyme. In addition, these drinks lack vitamins and minerals. By taking these drinks, people cut their intake of fresh juices, milk and even water and deprive themselves from essential vitamins and minerals that are mandatory for skin. Thus, the skin becomes more prone to wrinkles and aging.
Effect on Bones:
Phosphoric acid, present in carbonated drinks is violently poisonous, it de-oxidizes blood. In detergent manufacturing industries, phosphoric acid is used to produce water softener. Water softener removes Ca²+ and Mg²+ ion from hard water. In human body, the function remains the same by removing Ca²+ from bones causing osteoporosis (porous bones).
Effect of Caffeine:
In most of carbonated beverages, caffeine is deliberately added to make it addictive. Caffeine in carbonated drink is more readily absorbed than any other drink (like coffee, chocolate etc.). Caffeine disturbs sleep by stimulating nervous system.
It also makes premenstrual syndrome worse, causes dehydration and induces stomach to produce acids, aggravating hyperacidity. Since caffeine disturbs sleep, the body is more likely to produce C - reactive protein, which plays an important role in heart disease.
Prevention:
Use straw to reduce direct contact with teeth.
Rinse your mouth with water after drinking aerated drink.
Or simply do not drink soft drinks.
Remember that diseases do not develop overnight but do develop over the years with improper dietary habits. Also each individual has different tolerance level. So think of all long term effects on your body. The multitude side effects depend on your genetics and an individual's physical strength. Chronic illnesses are not a direct cause but they are triggered or worsened by bad food habits.

The initial comments you make about drinking soda are fine - it's general knowledge that sodas contain no nutritive value and that the sugar/corn syrup is a major cause of obesity. And yes, we know what the effects of caffeine are as well.
However, I have an issue with all of the unsubstantiated claims you make re. the effects of phosphoric acid and aspartame. If phosphoric acid is so highly toxic, why is it not heavily regulated by the FDA? Where is your research? What studies are you quoting to support your claims? Saying that something is acidic so it must be bad for us - or that it leaches Ca2+ from water so it must be doing so with our bones is not just bad science, it's misleading and wrong.
If you do have hard facts to back up your assertions, please post or link to them so that others can reference them and be convinced of the validity of your argument. Otherwise, it just sounds like a bunch of hysterical rhetoric.

I'd like to join you in your class action lawsuit against Coke. This is another insulting contest that was never meant to be won by anyone but to fatten up Coke's coffers and the people trying to win, just like the one McDonald's has each year.

I have drank Coca Cola most of my life and think that if you are going to put the blame on them for obesity in todays youth, then I think you need to ad Cable companies, video game makers,Computer companies{Microsoft}to your list to fight. I drank Coke as a kid, quite often but I was'nt allowed to sit and watch TV{cable and comuters weren't even heard of}we were spending our time playing ball, riding bikes or doing something energetic. Parents instead of sending your kids to there room(where there're TV's,video games and computers}send them outside to play or do anything energetic.
NO I don't blame soft drinks or fast food for obesity I blame parents for not making there kids be more active. My children don't have TV's,video games or computers in there rooms.I let them have them in the family room where I can regulate how much time is spent on them and what is being watched or what kind of video game is played.
Yes I agree that the contents of soft drinks are harmful but I'm the one that chooses to drink them and yes I allow my children to drink them to a deree of my choosing not Coca Cola's ads. An ad is an ad If you belive it it will happen.
If you don't belive in there contets or rewards they're not twisting your arm to participate and there ads don't force you to drink there products.

Its ok to have soft drinks, but only in moderation.

I just wanted to thankyou for the information that I just read on the topic of the coca-cola. The whole thing just blows me away and I to also have been beyong faithful to coke. And your information on the contest really now upsets me with it. It is impossible to get anything nice without spending a fortune on soda and you are right it is not worth it anymore. I am overweight and addicted to diet coke. I just wanted to say thank you for the FYI.

coca cola is full of b.s. they say in order to get rewarded you have to sign in when you do they say youn are not registered so when i do regiter they tell me i am already registered. they should be sued for false advertisement and fraud. does anyone else have this problem with this company?

Hey, I wonder if the Cocoa Cola powers to be have come up with a reason why Schools are pulling soda machines out of the schools, let see not enough kids are buying their product to play that stupid contest that no one can win.

I have been an avid, product loyal, promoter, for over 50 yrs.. When they tried to change on us, I went to Mountain Dew. When it went back, so did I. When glass bottles were still in use, and came in an 8 pack, my fridge was full and so was my pocket, even with the game they were playing then. I personaly agree with Julia, what does a lifelong customer get you. Some may be happy with a little of this or that, not me. Oh you know I'll keep drinking it, but you can be sure I won't be all that happy with a little this or that. KJH

That's actually just a "wive's tale", there is no truth the the battery, steak etc...myths. However, it still sucks as a consumable!
Posted by: Julia | Dec 18, 2006 6:06:52 PM
Who says you have to drink it? Use it to clean the rust off your bumpers. It works great. Use it to clean your toilet bowl it will remove rust stains.Pour it on you car battery to remove built up acid. Thats the way to get your points.

I was reading this comment about Coke and it's rewards. First I would like to mention that my children do not go to any store to buy coke just so they can enter points to get a prize, if this woman knows people who do this than I feel that this intellect level of doing so is at a low one. Very low. If you're an adult and keep drinking to reach 68 cokes a day to collect coke rewards you need to have a psychiatric check up. I'm serious!!! Wether Coke continues rewards or not I will still be drinking my 1 or 2 diets a day so will my husband. I collect codes because they are there and if it can get me a little something I will certainly take it. Just received a free magazine for a year. Thanks my Coke rewards!!! I will in no circomstances support ridiculous protests against Soda companies. It's like saying "alcohol is for sale they should not sell it because it forces me to drink it and drive!!! So these points and rewards in front of me forces me to drink more and die?

The company contest doesn't "require" anything. If you don't want to consume large amounts of a substance that you know darn well is bad for you, then don't participate in the contest. It's natural consequences - people in America nowadays don't believe they should hold themselves accountable for their own poor judgement...
Instead - let's blame a company for making me ruin my health because they offered me incentives for buying their product. I'm sorry - it doesn't work that way. It's like suing the police whenever they use an undercover cop to solicite johns....the johns are arrested because they were responsible for the choice they made - even if the police put it out in front of their face...
Posted by: John | Aug 23, 2006 9:01:43 AM
John, If I ran the world, and thankfully I don't even desire to do so, I would ban the consumption of soft drinks and fast food until 21 and IF I could get away with it, TV viewing for more than 1 hour a day and NOTHING but PBS, Discovery channel, etc until 21! but hey, I am living in a fantasy world.
But, let's talk reality, WHY would any reasonable and responsible company set up a contest to require such ridiculous consumption (or purchase) levels?
and yes, the lack of targeted advertising helps....but shows like MTV's programs, The OC etc don't help make such less desirable
Posted by: Julia | Aug 21, 2006 12:24:13 PM
Why would any reasonable person try and win a contest that would involve drinking Coke to the extent where they would jeopardize their life? If they are an adult, I blame their stupidity and ability to have the willpower to control their lives. If it is a child, then I blame the parent for their lack of involvement in their child's life.
The problem you should be addressing is that many parents today simply let their child do whatever the heck they want. Why do these parents expose their children to these negative ads by allowing them to watch too much television? Why do these parents buy this crap and make it available for them in their fridge?
I agree that Cola should not be available in the schools. I don't blame Coca-Cola for this, I blame the schools for allowing it and the parents who tolerate it.
Kids are going to eat and drink stuff that is bad for them. If you don't have that stuff at home and parents actually band together to fight the schools from allowing it in their buildings, the opportunity for kids to get their hands on it is reduced.
Do you honestly believe that getting rid of ads reduces the desire? As you said, look at drugs, cigarettes and booze. They don't advertise and they are still having problems keeping it away from kids!
Besides, Coke cannot even be compared to these things - if they could - then why don't you try and increase the age to 21 for drinking Coke?
Posted by: John | Aug 21, 2006 11:35:59 AM
John, I never said to censor any ads, I said it makes our jobs as parents harder. Advertising is a HUGE industry for a reason, it works. Companies spend millions, if not billions running ads, because they work.
forums such as this, are one small way to open up discussion and perhaps get the other side airred and awareness spread so that personal responsibility has some tools to support healthful decision making rather than being swayed by very inticing ads.
Temptation is luring, and that is why we DON'T allow advertisments for drugs, alcohol, cigarette, porn, etc to be TARGETED to children!
But the Snack Fairy, Kebbler Elves, Ronald McDonald, KoolAid dude and more force themselves into our culture and into the minds of unsuspecting children.
Posted by: Julia | Aug 21, 2006 9:21:24 AM
Your answer to this is to "censor" the way a company markets their product? I see garbage being sold to my children and myself 24/7. We are bombarded everyday of our lives to buy things that we don't need or are bad for our health.
Time is valuable, and time is best spent teaching your children willpower and that all actions have consequences. Of course its not easy. Since the beginning of time, temptation has existed. The most important skill someone can learn is to deal with temptation. Thinking you can eliminate temptation and the problem will go away is not the answer...
If not Coke - it will be something else - the only answer is to learn to fight temptation. It's not easy - whenever I have the urge for a cola - I drink water instead - only you are responsible for what you put in your body.
Posted by: John | Aug 21, 2006 9:10:47 AM
John, do you have kids?
First off, parents must take the first responsibility and teach their children, not just by saying NO but by leading by example when it comes to health and healthy actions.
But unfortunately, it isn't that easy. When their beloved characters are pitching unhealthy products, it makes the parents job that much harder. (Vice Busting Diet mentions TV as the 3rd biggest problem in Obesity, so this site and me addresses not only the problem, but how to solve it BY taking personal responsibility, thank you John)
Then, children attend schools inundated with soft drink machines and school is starting up, there is NO reason that the soda companies can't restock them right NOW with healthier options but they "agreed" to do it but not until 2010.
And after school, other parents.
You can judge harshly John and say we are lazy Americans, but Obesity our American crappy products are on their way to whereever YOU live and sooner than you will appreciate. Then, let's talk.
Posted by: Julia | Aug 21, 2006 7:55:20 AM
Wow! This is the problem with America. Take responsibility for yourselves and what your children eat and drink. Stop blaming other people or companies for your kid being fat and eating the wrong things. As a child growing up - my Mom would always tell me "NO" whenever I asked her if I could have some pop. The only time I ever had a chance to drink pop was when I was out of my mom's sight - which was hardly ever. If you can't control how much pop your kids drinks on a daily basis, that's your problem.

You will get a kick out of this. I saw a Coca Cola ad in the magazine and this is what it says:
"YES, COFFEE AND SODA ARE TWO WAYS TO HELP YOU STAY HYDRATED. NO, WE'RE NOT PULLING YOUR LEG.
...If you're not in the mood for water, it's okay to reach for something else you enjoy, like fruit juice, tea or a soft drink..."
