But when I looked at her food choices, I had to wonder. She chose highly processed foods such as boxed cereal instead of something that would have offered her far more calories for the penny, such as oatmeal. She chose convenience foods such as bagged "baby" carrots and microwave popcorn. She chose foods with very little caloric content such as a bag of organic lettuce (more than 10 percent of her budget) and no nutritive value (pop.) She spent more than 15 percent of her budget on four apples.

Her shopping cart didn't contain much in the way of budget-conscious healthy standards - where was the 10-pound bag of potatoes that leapt immediately to mind when I considered trying to feed myself cheaply? Where were the dried beans?

Her choices are hers; as she points out, it's none of my business whether a food stamp user chooses Cheerios over oatmeal. But if those choices don't provide enough calories, it doesn't follow that $21 is insufficient. Her hunger and worry were the result of her food choices, not of her budget. go on --->

Comments: A healthy diet does take a little more time and effort than driving through a place that will hand you greasy, fatty, salty food through a window...but it's worth it, and it feels a whole lot better! Although, not everyone may have the time and budget, there are ways to get around that as Beth Schwartz learns.  The easiest thing to pick up at a grocery store is fruits - I can't think of one that isn't ready to eat - except for the peeling or cutting open part, and you're cutting into nature's goodness. As for vegetables, almost the same thing, although many taste better combined with something - a salad for instance. Set your budget, plan on what you're going to get, and make your trip to the store. It's a good feeling when you come home with a bag or two full of fruits and vegetables. And it's an even better feeling when you're consuming them!
